ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — As northwest Missouri heads into another summer weekend, local officials are balancing public safety, transportation improvements, and community programs aimed at helping residents prepare for the weeks ahead.
From a proposed increase in traffic enforcement funding to continued road construction, dangerous weather, and back-to-school preparations, several developments are worth keeping on your radar.
City Council to Consider Nearly $156,000 for Traffic Enforcement
The St. Joseph City Council is expected to consider accepting a $155,802 grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation during its meeting Monday evening.
If approved, the funding would support additional traffic enforcement efforts throughout the city, providing local law enforcement with additional resources to address speeding, impaired driving, seat belt compliance, and other traffic safety initiatives.
Traffic enforcement grants are commonly used throughout Missouri to help reduce crashes and encourage safer driving behaviors. While the proposal still requires City Council approval, acceptance of the funding could result in increased enforcement activity on St. Joseph roadways in the coming months.
Heat Continues Today as Storm Chances Increase This Evening
Friday marks another hot and humid day across St. Joseph, with afternoon temperatures expected to reach around 90 degrees before scattered thunderstorms begin developing later this evening.
Forecasters expect the greatest chance for storms between 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., with some storms capable of producing heavy rainfall, gusty winds, small hail, and frequent lightning.
Although the prolonged stretch of dangerous heat begins easing slightly heading into the weekend, residents are still encouraged to remain cautious during the hottest part of the day.
Health officials recommend:
- Staying well hydrated.
- Limiting strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon.
- Taking frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings.
- Never leaving children or pets inside parked vehicles.
- Remaining weather aware if outdoor activities are planned this evening.

Route 59 Project Nearing Completion
Drivers should continue using caution around the Route 59 construction zone as work continues near the Route 59, Route 752, and Route U intersection.
The temporary closure between West Valley Street and West Cliff Street is scheduled to conclude today as crews complete another phase of the ongoing intersection improvement project.
Motorists are reminded that construction schedules remain weather dependent and could change if additional work becomes necessary.
Elsewhere, several MoDOT projects remain active throughout northwest Missouri, and drivers are encouraged to obey reduced speed limits, watch for changing traffic patterns, and remain alert while traveling through work zones.
Health Department Offers Back-to-School Immunizations
With the first day of school quickly approaching, the St. Joseph Health Department is encouraging parents and guardians to verify that their children’s immunizations are up to date before classes begin.
The department continues offering immunization services for eligible students, helping families meet Missouri school vaccination requirements before the start of the academic year.
Officials recommend scheduling appointments early to avoid the last-minute rush that traditionally occurs during the weeks leading up to the beginning of school.

Chiefs Volunteers Giving Back to the Community
While the Kansas City Chiefs continue their annual training camp in St. Joseph, members of the organization’s Red Coaters volunteer program are spending time off the practice field supporting the community.
