Monday in St. Joseph: Council Action, Highway Safety and Back-to-School Preparations

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — August 17, 2026

City Council to Consider Additional Traffic-Enforcement Funding

One of the most significant items on the local government calendar Monday evening is a proposal involving $155,802 in state transportation funding for traffic enforcement.

The St. Joseph City Council is expected to consider whether the city should accept the funding, which could provide additional resources for traffic-safety enforcement within St. Joseph.

The important distinction for residents is that the funding has not yet been approved by the City Council. WRJE will follow the council’s action and report the outcome after a vote is taken.

If accepted, the funding could support additional efforts aimed at improving safety on city streets.

Residents interested in following City Council business can review agendas and meeting information through the city’s official agenda system.

Motorcyclist Injured in Buchanan County I-29 Crash

A weekend motorcycle crash on Interstate 29 sent a rider to the hospital following a single-vehicle accident in Buchanan County.

According to information attributed to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred Saturday afternoon on southbound Interstate 29 near mile marker 33.2.

A 62-year-old Georgia man was riding south when the motorcycle left the roadway.

The crash serves as another reminder for drivers and motorcyclists to remain alert on the interstate, particularly during the busy summer travel season.

WRJE will update the story if additional information concerning the rider’s condition or circumstances surrounding the crash becomes available.

Quieter Weather Gives St. Joseph a Break

After days of excessive heat and periods of stormy weather, Monday has brought comparatively quieter conditions to St. Joseph.

Temperatures were around the lower 80s during the early afternoon, providing some relief from the oppressive heat experienced across northwest Missouri last week.

There is no significant weather warning currently dominating the St. Joseph forecast.

That quieter pattern may not last indefinitely, however, as thunderstorm chances return to the forecast Tuesday. St. Joseph and Buchanan County could see strong to severe thunderstorms Tuesday into Tuesday night. Large hail and damaging winds appear to be the primary threats at this time, although an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

Residents should remain weather aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings.

Residents should continue monitoring changing conditions, particularly if they have outdoor plans.

WRJE will continue monitoring National Weather Service information and will provide immediate updates should watches or warnings be issued for Buchanan County.

Back-to-School Immunizations Available at City Health Department

As families prepare for the beginning of another school year, the St. Joseph Health Department is reminding parents and guardians to make sure their children’s immunizations are current.

Infant, child and adult vaccinations are available through the city’s health clinic at the Patee Market Health Center, 904 South 10th Street.

Current clinic hours listed by the city are:

Monday through Friday

  • 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The clinic is closed during the afternoon on the final business day of each month for vaccine inventory.

Families are asked to bring the child’s most recent immunization record and an insurance card, if applicable. Children younger than 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The Health Department recommends calling 816-271-4725 to confirm vaccine availability.

Chiefs Training Camp Keeps Spotlight on St. Joseph

The Kansas City Chiefs were back on the practice field Monday at Missouri Western State University as the team’s annual St. Joseph training camp continues.

Monday marked Day 15 of training camp practice, according to the Chiefs, with players and coaches continuing preparations for the upcoming NFL season.

For St. Joseph, Chiefs camp represents considerably more than football.

The annual event brings fans and visitors from across the region into the city, placing St. Joseph and Missouri Western in the national sports spotlight while providing an economic boost to local restaurants, hotels, retailers and other businesses.

The Chiefs are holding their 16th training camp at Missouri Western State University this year.

WRJE News Desk

Monday has begun relatively quietly from a breaking-news standpoint, but that does not mean there is nothing worth watching.

The most significant developing local story will likely come from Monday evening’s St. Joseph City Council meeting. WRJE will be watching for action on the proposed $155,802 traffic-enforcement grant and other issues affecting residents.

Weather also remains on the assignment desk as thunderstorm chances return Tuesday.

WRJE will continue monitoring local law enforcement, emergency services, city government, transportation, weather and community developments throughout St. Joseph and Buchanan County.
